Seed to Feed: CKWLU reports on their nutrition education program, which brings together eating healthy and eating green, as well as bringing together Washington and Lee students with their local community.
Flying the Coop: How to be a food activist beyond the college campus : In Organic on the Green, Vera Fabian writes passionately about her work on food issues:
When people ask us what we want to do, we aren’t quite sure how to put it into words. ‘I want to work in food,’ we say, and our relatives ask us if we’re going to go to culinary school. We then try to explain that we’re a part of this emerging movement of people young and old, in every corner of the world, who are devoting their lives to defending our human right to enjoy food that nourishes our bodies, the earth, and the people who produce it.”
Food Safety Music: Anyone who has ever been through ServSafe training will appreciate the tunes of the “Elvis of E. Coli,” otherwise known as Dr. Carl Winter Director of the FoodSafe Program and Extension Food Toxicologist at UC Davis. Must be heard to be believed. (Thanks to Wasted Food for tuning us in.)
The Urban & Environmental Policy Institute: Mark Villianatos writes about SNAP, the supplemental nutrition assistance programs:
The Economic Research Service of USDA…calculated that a 10 to 20 percent reduction in the price of fruits and vegatables would lead to a 2.5 to 10 percent increase in the consumption of healthy foods by people with low incomes (who currenlty eat only 55 percent of recommended daily servings of fruits/vegatables).”
Hailing from DC Central Kitchen there is a new blog by the Culinary Job Training Class:
The four best days of the year at DC Central Kitchen are CJT Graduation Days”
Hopefully you’ve enjoyed seeing about other programs going on around the nation, but you’ve probably got as good as an eye about some of these links as we do. If you seen any related blogs or news stories about CKP or anything food related we’d love to hear about it. Email us at blog@campuskitchens.org.
