I came across this article today called No more lunch bills: Schools go after deadbeats. Administrators at Albuquerque Public Schools have instituted a policy that says students who charge too many lunches to their parents’ account will be handed a cheese sandwich instead of a hot meal.
One single mother says:
“Some parents don’t have even $1 sometimes. If they do, it’s for something else, like milk at home. There are some families that just don’t have it and that’s the reason they’re not paying.”
Yet, in a state where 60% of public school students receive free or reduced lunches, what’s a school district to do?
As volunteers, coordinators, and people concerned about hunger, where do we stand?
In any case, sounds like the NSD team should be working on getting a Campus Kitchen set up in New Mexico.
