How does your Campus Kitchen get supported? Where does the money come from? For those of you who are involved in the process know that raising money for a Campus Kitchen isn’t exactly easy, and there are a lot of places to look in a lot of different ways.
When I was thinking about this opportunity I was trying to figure out what this all meant. What are some of the best ways to get CKP students involved? Just like Ogres and Onions, non-profits have layers and support can go well beyond your local volunteers, foundations/grants and individual donors. Today I’m sharing with you a bill that is currently in the US Congress.
There are a lot dialogues going on right now in your communities about hunger and poverty. We’re hoping that CKP can flex our collective voice box so everyone in DC can hear about the work that each of you are doing in support of your community.
HR 176, proposed by Representative Jose Serrano and thirteen co-sponsors, the Anti-Hunger Empowerment Act would amend the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) by reducing administrative requirements and awarding grants to certain community-based non-profit organizations to establish “Beyond Soup Kitchen” pilot programs. Sounds similar to a few Campus Kitchens I know.
Currently this bill is in the House Committee on Agriculture. We’re hoping that you can write a letter to your representatives and let them know that this bill is something you care about. As Representatives and Senators work on initiatives that they know are making an impact, we’re more likely to see support.
Join the voices of non-profits in DC, just like our onion. Send a letter, an email or a photo to your representative. As you continue to great work in your communities, this is a great chance to support CKP on a whole other layer.
