Campus Kitchens Kick into High Gear for MLK Day 2010
“Everybody can be great because everybody can serve.” – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Today’s the day – the day when The Campus Kitchens Project grantees join networks of individuals across the United States to make Martin Luther King Jr. Day a day on, not a day off.
One sub-grantee, The Mission Continues, will be featured tonight, 8/7 central, on USA Network in the one-hour documentary “American Character Along Highway 50” in honor of MLK Day.
Also today, The Mission Continues will work with The Campus Kitchen at Saint Louis University to host a massive food drive, organize donations, cook, and deliver meals to low-income, elderly, and disabled community members in the St. Louis area. In addition, The Mission Continues is hosting service projects in six other cities in honor of MLK Day.
The Campus Kitchen at Baylor University will use MLK Day, the first anniversary of its opening, to assemble and deliver hundreds of box lunches for a group of volunteers working on the Texas Urban Gardening Coalition. Learn more about the Campus Kitchen at Baylor University activities here.
The Campus Kitchen at University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire will dive right into direct service today, beginning their efforts with a Community Table, which includes a free lunch, t-shirts, and a special program about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. After the discussion, volunteers will split up and spread out across the community to paint, care for kids, and serve meals through the Campus Kitchen.
This is only the start of 18 service projects in 13 states hosted by The Campus Kitchens Project. As the semester of service continues, we can’t wait to see what the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will bring.
