MEDIA ADVISORY:

Boston-area high school and college students are using on-campus kitchen space and unused food recovered from cafeterias and restaurants to feed local children and families in need. The new, volunteer-driven kitchen prepares meals for children and families at The Early Learning Center East in Dorchester.

WHAT: Official Kick-off of the Campus Kitchen at UMass Boston

WHERE: University of Massachusetts Boston, The Campus Center, 100 Morrissey Boulevard Ballroom


Participants include: Keith Motley, PhD, UMass Boston Chancellor; Mike Curtin, CEO of DC Central Kitchen; Margaret A. McKenna, President of the Walmart Foundation; and student volunteers, who prepare menus, meals and coordinate meal delivery.

The UMass Boston Campus Kitchen is the first of six kitchens made possible by support from the Walmart Foundation. Additional support was secured by the late Senator Ted Kennedy and Senator John Kerry along with funding provided by the Sodexo Foundation, which also provides kitchen space for operations.
