Gettysburg 10 Ton Event

It’s only fitting that, just as we reach Earth Day 2010, the Campus Kitchen at Gettysburg College will celebrate two major milestones: 20,000 pounds of food recovered and 10,000 meals served. The powerhouse of a Campus Kitchen, which first started cooking up change November 2007, will recognize the accomplishment with style – Ten Tons, to be exact. The event will begin with a patio barbeque feast, complete with free ice cream, raffles, music, and t-shirts. To kick off the day’s activities, the Campus Kitchen will host a free relay challenge, where teams of four must complete 10 stations of activities. Winners of the challenge will receive gift certificates and treats, and the first ten teams to sign up get a free t-shirt.

Following the competition, Earth Day revelers will retreat to the Lyceum for a discussion with chefs, farmers, and community members about how to make healthy food accessible while fighting hunger, poverty, and promoting local economy.

10,000 at William and Mary

Following on the heels of three years of service, The Campus Kitchen at William and Mary will host a reception as volunteers hit 10,000 meals served. The event, which runs from 4 to 6 p.m. includes free food, entertainment, and an awards presentation. This comes amid a wave of publicity for the Campus Kitchen. A bill from the Virginia House of Delegates recently recognized CKWM. In addition, the student volunteers at the Campus Kitchen received an award from the Points of Light Institute for commitment to community service.

Students at Marquette University prepare the 100,000th meal

Serving the 100,000th meal at Marquette University

As several Campus Kitchens hit 10,000 milestones and several more are working quickly toward it, the Campus Kitchen at Marquette University, one of the oldest kitchens (and nationally staffed), quietly hit the 100,000 meal mark. April 19, 2010, the Campus Kitchen prepared and later served up its 100,000th meal to Heart Love Place Kids’ Café. Instead of hosting an event open to the public, coordinator Amanda Parrell invited about 20 volunteers to join in on the assembly line, making lasagna, scalloped potatoes and salad, among other things to round out 200 meals. Sodexo dining services donated a cake to celebrate the occasion. Marquette will host a larger recognition of the milestone in the Fall, when students return to campus.
