For anyone excited about the sustainability aspects of the Campus Kitchen mission, you may be interested in exploring OurEarth.org’s summer internship opportunity.

OurEarth.org started in 2006 as a way to make it easier for the general public to access environmental organization. Now, OurEarth.org is a national 501 (c)3 non-profit organization and grassroots initiative that aims to aid and develop environmental leaders, in part, by transforming the way environmental programs, activities, and information are found on the internet.

OurEarth.org’s summer internship program provides undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to develop their leadership and professional skills, create new content for the OurEarth.org website and expand the impact and reach of the organization. Over the course of the 8 week program, interns will work remotely on a diverse array of projects, participate in educational webinars and work with other interns from across the country, connecting them into a network of grassroots environmental activists. This great program will prepare participants to be environmental leaders on their campuses and in their communities.

The application is due April 15th, but interns will be accepted on a rolling basis, so get yours in as soon as possible. Click here to download the form!

Attention green thumbs and community garden aficionados: two paid (stipend) internship positions at The Washington Youth Garden in Washington, D.C. just sprouted up, and they’re the perfect scent to follow for Campus Kitchen volunteers.

The Washington Youth Garden, based out of the U.S. National Arboretum, uses the garden cycle as a tool to inspire children and families to engage in self-discovery, explore relationships with food and the natural world, and contribute to the health and well-being of their communities.

The garden is a full-functioning, one acre, organic lot with a production area, herb garden, fruit section, butterfly garden, and themed educational gardens. The program consists of year-round gardening and nutrition education through school-based and outdoor garden programs.

Teach, Reach, Feed, Lead, and Garden this summer

Responsibilities of the Education Intern include assisting with the development and facilitation of gardening activities, nutrition education activities for the Growing Food…Growing Together and Seed to Supper programs, and some assistance with the maintenance of the garden.

A Garden Intern will spend the two months (both internships run mid-June to mid-August with flexible start and end dates) learning general organic gardening techniques while assisting the Garden Coordinator with operation and maintenance of the garden. That means: seeding, planting, weeding, mulching beds and paths, pruning, harvesting, watering, fertilizing, etc… The Garden Intern will also help develop garden specific instruction.

What do you need to apply? A degree, or comparable experience in Horticulture, Plant Science, Environmental Studies, Biology, or a related field and interest or experience in gardening and food (Campus Kitchen volunteers should have that one down!) The stipend is $2500 for 35 hours per week.

The Child Hunger Corps – a new collaboration of ConAgra Foods Foundation and Feeding America – might be the two year plan you’re looking for.

August 2010, the first six members of the Child Hunger Corps will roll up their sleeves to work in Feeding America-affiliated food banks while aiding community-based efforts to help end child hunger.

The two year position offers a stipend for living expenses and full benefits with medical and dental, while providing the opportunity to work hand-in-hand with the nation’s largest network of food banks and stay in contact with other Corps volunteers.

Feeding America will look for Corps members who can develop a food bank’s capacity and capability for programs targeting childhood hunger while increasing access to nutritious foods at the time children need it most: in the summer, after school, weekends, school holidays, and at home.

Since the program is brand new, they’re only offering it in a few cities:

Little Rock, Arkansas
Ft. Meyers, Florida
Houston, Texas
Grove City, Ohio
Portland. Oregon
Salem, Virginia

Interested in becoming a Child Hunger Corps member? The application only requires a one page resume and two pages of short-answer questions. The deadline to apply is February 26.

View the application requirements and apply here.

Read the official press release here.

Volunteer with a Campus Kitchen and looking for a post-college internship? Pursuing a career in anything from marketing to finance and design? Thinking of heading out (or back) West?

Tom’s Shoes, a Santa Monica, Calif.-based company, is looking for interns with the leadership qualities of CKP-ers (no really, they sent us an email) to work at their headquarters. The best part: an internship with Tom’s would continue your socially responsible efforts. The company was founded on the “one for one” premise. For every pair of shoes sold, the organization donates one pair to a child who has none.
