2008 in review

2008 brought big changes to the Campus Kitchen at Marquette. Here is a recap:

1) New coordinator

In April 2008, Jen Filz joined the staff of The Campus Kitchens Project as the new coordinator of the Campus Kitchen at Marquette (CKMU). Jen spent two years working as an Americorps VISTA at Alverno College coordinating service-learning projects before coming to CKMU.

2) New kitchen

In July 2008, CKMU made the move from Schroeder Dining Hall to Mashuda Dining Hall on the Marquette Campus. Mashuda is home to Sodexo “Hero of Everyday Life” and CKMU supporter Sharon Hope. Sharon is always willing to give students recipe ideas and help out wherever she is needed. We are happy to be working so closely with her!

3) New Partnerships:

In 2008 the Campus Kitchen at Marquette continued its meal expansion.  This year CKMU started meal delivery to Ascension Lutheran and Bethany Calvary churches, two Goodwill meal sites.

In addition, the Campus Kitchen started a partnership with the Westside Health Clinic. The partnership began as a nutrition education program run by our intern Rose D’Angelo and will be continuing in 2009.

4) Culinary  Job Training:

The Campus Kitchen at Marquette offered two sessions of Culinary Job Training to teach basic food service skills to unemployed Milwaukee residents. Nine of the 10 graduates received their Servsafe certification.

5) Turkeypalooza

In 2008, the Campus Kitchen delivered hearty Thanksgiving meals to all of our regular community partners. In addition, the Campus Kitchen also delivered 58 bags of groceries. Thanks to all who volunteered or donated to this event!
