Fall 2011- CKUVA Semester in Review

February 6, 2012 – 5:21 PM

Hello everyone!

Though we haven’t been as virtually active on our site, CKUVA has made some tremendous strides this past semester as far as sustaining our weekly deliveries, transitioning to our new home in O’Hill smoothly and running some superb fundraising events. Here’s a quick summary of what we’ve been up to.

Q’Doba Night – October 2011

A nearby Q’Doba, located on the University’s historic “Corner” generously allowed us to distribute vouchers for the night of October 4th. For every customer who presented a voucher after purchasing a burrito and a drink  on the evening of October 4, Q’Doba agreed to donate $1.50 for the cause. While we didn’t bring in the 105 guests our Facebook event projected, we did (with a lot of on-grounds promoting) raise $86.00!

Turkeypalooza 2011- November

CKUVA partnered with member organizations of the University Inter-Sorority Council and the University Salsa Club to raise nearly $150 in donations for Thanksgiving basket dinner kits to some of our local client agencies’ affiliated families. We would like to express the biggest thanks to the Salsa Club Executive Board for holding a raffle for the cause during their fall showcase and the following sororities: Delta Gamma, Gamma Phi Beta, Kappa Delta, and Tri-Delta.

Special Thank Yous

The exec board would like  to thank all of our amazing volunteers and shift leaders- we literally cannot function without you. A special thanks to our Food Hub volunteers who consistently partnered with the organization in exchange for fresh food for our program. Also, thank you O’Hill staff and our donors for your cooperation and generosity.

Finally, here are some photos of our new location and our volunteers on shifts!

CK's Thanksgiving event

TurkeyPaloooooza!
Sponsored by the Campus Kitchen at UVA

Give back this Thanksgiving! Help the Campus Kitchen provide Thanksgiving food to:
Bridging the Gap’s International Thanksgiving Dinner
Hope House
On Our Own

We ask that each organization pledge to sponsor one (or more) turkeys and pumpkin pies

(one 16 lb. turkey is approx. $15, and one pumpkin pie is approx. $5)

CKUVA will use the money to purchase turkeys, pumpkin pies, and all the other fixings for Thanksgiving dinner for three community organizations.

We will also accept donations of dry goods or baked goods, preferably:

      • homeade pumpkin or apple pies
      • cans of cranberry sauce, green beans, pumpkin, or gravy
        • boxes of instant stuffing or mashed potatoes

Please give your monetary donations to your CKUVA representative by November 22. Deliver all dry/can goods to Runk dining hall on November 21, between 10:30 and 11:30am. Questions can be directed to ckuva@campuskitchens.org

Thank you for your support!

Turkeypalooza!

October 22, 2010 – 10:47 AM

This November, CKUVA is bringing Turkeypalooza to Charlottesville for the first time! It’s one of the many Turkeypalooza events going on at Campus Kitchens throughout the country. Our goal is to provide Thanksgiving meals to a variety of under-served community members. We hope to receive donations from grocery stores, the Local Food Hub, UVA dining, and more! We plan to reach out to different clubs, Greek organizations, and religious groups for food donations and volunteers. Potential agencies we will deliver to include Hope House, On Our Own, and Bridging the Gap. More info to come soon!

Last Sunday, NBC29 visited the CKUVA kitchen during our cooking/delivery shift for Salvation Army. Check it out:

Also, two Leadership Team members just got back from the Hungry For Justice Conference in Waco, Texas. They got to meet many other CK-ers from all over the country and came back with new and exciting ideas for this semester! To hear all about our plans and how YOU can become more involved with CKUVA, come to our General Body Meeting this Sunday, October 17 at 6p.m. in Cabell 340. We will be discussing the expansion of our Leadership Team and shift leader crew, in addition to talking about plans for our big Thanksgiving event and volunteer bonding activities (apple-picking, anyone?). See you there!
